Top 5 Titanic Tours of Belfast
Titanic Tours Belfast…
This is a really good tour and the price includes picking you up from your hotel (or wherever you’re staying) in Belfast in a luxury 5 passenger Mercedes MPV. The tour is actually conducted by a relative of an engineer who worked Harland & Wolff Shipyard.
Her name is Susie Millar, the great granddaughter of Thomas Millar, an engineer who was involved in the building of the great ship, and who perished on its fateful maiden voyage
Susie, who previously worked in TV, has an in-depth knowledge of the city, so she’ll point out all the various landmarks associated with the famous steamship along the way.
As part of the tour, you’ll pass the homes of engineers who built the ship, Pirrie and Thomas Andrews. The house where Andrews lived at Dunallon is now home to the Irish Football Association.
After this, you’ll head to the Titantic Quarter, and see the shipyards where the ship was built, as well as the offices where the extensive ship plans were drawn up. Northern Ireland Science Park is another stop on your Titanic tour, along with a trip to see SS Nomadic, the tender ship of the Titanic’s and the only remaining White Star Line boat.
The tour operates all year round, on a pre-booked basis only. £25 is the rate per person, or £40. For approximately £100 you can do a full day tour and visit other sights in Belfast such as the Stormont Parliament Buildings, Belfast Castle, as well as the peace lines along the Falls and Shankhill roads. Prior booking is essential.
Lagan Boat Company Titanic Tour…
Scheduled guided boat Titanic tours take in the Harland & Wolff shipbuilding yards as well as the famous Titanic slipways around the historic Belfast Harbour. The Harbour area was closed off for many years except for shipyard workers, but nowadays the tour of the shipyards is an excellent way to relive the history of the area, and recreate the sights and sounds of a typical working day.
Titanic tours depart from the number 2 jetty in front of the Royal Mail building past the Big Fish sculpture on Donegall Quay. The tour itinerary takes in the Lagan lookout points, the Titanic Drawing Rooms, the Titanic Slipways and steam cranes used in its construction.
You’ll get to see other impressive ships such as the HMS Caroline as well. Also part of the tour are trips to the famed Alexandra and Thompson Dock pumphouses, and the Titanic Fitting Out Wharf, where the ship had its structure aligned and fitted!
The cost per person is £10 for adults and £8 for children. Family tickets are available for 2 adults and 2 children at a cost of £28, and any extra child costs £6 each. Group rates of £200 are available. The tour lasts for 75 minutes in total.
Belfast City Taxi Tours of the Titanic Shipyards…
Belfast City Taxi Tours provide an informative tour of the Harland and Wolff Shipyards. Other ”stops” around the city centre include the Parliament buildings, the Cathedral Quarter of Belfast and the Queen’s University area. Price per person for this tour ranges from £12 pounds, depending on the tour duration.
The Titanic 2012 Tour…
The Titanic 2012 Tour starts off at the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum near Holywood, where you can see the Titanic Exhibition, jam-packed with Titanic memorabilia. As you travel to the museum on the main Belfast to Bangor Road, you’ll pass the Harland and Wolff shipyards. Why not stop off and take a self-guided tour?
Pay a visit to the Belfast Linen Industry Conservation area at Bedford Street in Belfast, where the linen used on the ship was made! A trip to Belfast City Hall to view the Titanic Memorial in the City Hall Grounds is also well worthwhile.
East of Belfast at Comber, you’ll find a memorial to the ships main architect Thomas Andrews.
Belfast Titanic Interactive Trail…
Another way to learn more about the Titanic is with the Belfast Titanic Interactive Trail. Using the latest GPS based technology you’ll be transported back in time as you tour the most important Titanic sites. It’s available at the Belfast Welcome Centre.
No trip to Belfast would be complete without taking a Titanic tour. Hopefully our guide will help you choose one.
